Chettinad Muttai Kuzhambu (Chettinad Egg Curry)

Different types of egg curry is made in chettinad. Mostly if it is for lunch poondu vengaya kuzhambu is made and egg is added in the end. In this curry egg will get the hot and sour taste of the gravy. But the lady cook (Akka) in my home in chettinad will make an egg gravy which will be little spicy and go well with the tiffen items as well. So whenever on holidays if we can’t prepare non-veg, can give this spicy egg curry a try and satisfy the people at home.

Ingredients
Boiled egg-4
Small onion-20 or big onion chopped-1
Tomato-1
Chopped ginger-1 teaspoon
10 pods Chopped garlic
Chili powder or sambar powder-1 teaspoon
Coriander powder-1 table spoon
Garam masala powder-1 teaspoon

For grinding
Cocunut-2 to 3 table spoon
Fennel seeds-1 teaspoon
Cumin seed-1 teaspoon
Cashewnut-8 or Kas Kas-1 teaspoon
Method
Boil the eggs. Make a small split in the middle. Grind the coconut paste. Keep the kadai in the stove. In a teaspoon of oil season the curry with a teaspoon of fennel seed, a green chili and curry leaf. Add the onion and garlic pieces and sauté well. Now add the chopped ginger and garlic pieces and sauté that too for few minutes. Finally add the chopped tomatoes and sauté till the tomato pieces get cooked. Now add the chili powder, garam masala and coriander powder. Mix well. Be careful that the powder doesn’t get burned. Now add 2 cups of water and the salt needed. Keep the stove in medium flame and allow the curry to get cooked and reduce to ½ the quantity. Now mix the grounded coconut in a cup of water and add to the curry. Cook for 5 minutes. You will find the gravy thickening due to the cashews in the masala. Now add the boiled egg into the curry and cook for 5 more minutes in medium fire.

Hi, I just hit upon your blog accidentally through IFood.tv site. The controversial comments made me curious to have a look at your blog. The recipes are amazing. I am a great fan of chettinad recipes but I used to taste all these only in hotels as I am a pure chennaite. Now I am planning to try one by one. Hope I'll be the first one in my family to make chettinad dishes. Thanks.

simple yet tasty receipe, turned out pretty well.

Few suggestions, could include preparation time, cooking time to give an idea on how long it is going to take.

green chilli, curry leave, oil are used but not mentioned in the ingredients. not sure if a tablespoon of oil was sufficient.

Like the way you have pictured ingredients. Had come to your site after seeing the comments in ifood.tv

Cheers

Gopi,I normally dont mention oil quantity unless more is required. If not mentioned as per your diet plan you can use oil.Generally 1 or 2 teaspoons of oil will be sufficient.Thankyou for your comment

Hello Aachi,

I'm big fan of your chettinad recipes. I tried this Chettinad Muttai Kuzhambu coupleof times and it turned out great.Today, I followed all the steps with a small variation instead of using boiled eggs, after the gravy is almost ready i turned it to low flame and broke the eggs into the kadai with gravy and cooked the gravy for 10 mins and it turned out super delicious :)

Unknown said...

Dear Aunty,

Made this for lunch today. It came out Yummy!! The only change I made was that I poached the egg in the gravy instead of boiling them. Was excellent!

Thanks,
Preeti
